On the afternoon of September 19, Liu Yunjie, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, director of the China Unicom Science and Technology Commission and director of the Zijinshan Laboratory for Network Communications and Security, was invited to our “Cyber Lecture” and gave a wonderful speech on “Opportunities for Future Networks and 5G Networks”. Secretary of the Party Committee Shi Chang, Executive Chair Cheng Guang, and deputy secretary of the Party Committee Zhang Lu attended the event, along with more than 250 other teachers and students.

First of all, Academician Liu Yunjie discussed the development needs and challenges of future networks and 5G networks. He talked about the change in business needs from the first generation internet to the third generation internet, emphasized the needs of future networks for differential service guarantee and deterministic bandwidth/delay, and showed typical application situations of future networks, such as industrial internet and car networking, etc. These future application situations all require the future networks to have the characteristics of low delay, low jitter and high reliability.

Then, Academician Liu Yunjie talked about the latest technological trends of the future network and 5G network, mainly including service-oriented/differentiated service guarantee, deterministic network, network slicing, optical +IP convergence, network operating system, cloud network integration and artificial intelligence. He also introduced the future network test facility (CENI) project, which can provide a basic environment for technology innovation related to network/B5G/6G in the future.

At the end of the lecture, Academician Liu Yunjie pointed out that the global research on the future network has made rapid progress since 2005. The new generation network is established with new structure and new technology to meet the needs of development. The global network is now entering an era of change and provides a new historical opportunity worldwide. In the next 10 years, 5G will usher in a golden period of development. In 2030, 5G will begin to evolve to 6G. Under such circumstances, he encouraged young students to combine their personal development with the strategic needs of China, work for the needs of the country and the nation, practice their skills, and contribute to the cyber power.

In the Q & A session, the students were quite active and enthusiastic, with questions like “what might become the bottleneck of 5G network” and “what efforts should a graduate make in combining network security with artificial intelligence”. Academician Liu Yunjie answered the students' questions with great patience, and the lecture was successfully concluded with warm applause.
