On the morning of May 20, the opening ceremony of the School of Cyber Science and Engineering, Southeast University was held in the Jiulonghu Hotel of Jiulonghu campus. Mr. Li Shigui, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Nanjing Municipal Committee and Secretary of Jiangning District, Bao Feng, Deputy Director of the Office of Cyberspace Affairs Commission of Jiangsu Provincial Committee, Zhang Guangjun, President of SEU, Wang Baoping, Executive Vice President of SEU, Wu Gang, Vice President of SEU, Jin Baosheng, Vice President of SEU, academician Yu Quan, Dean of School of Cyber Science and Engineering, brother schools, representatives from the cooperative enterprises and related Schools of SEU, and college teachers and students attended the ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Wang Baoping, Executive Vice President of SEU.
Before the official opening ceremony, the participants watched the school video “Being Profound and Distinctive, Aiming High to be First-class”.
At the ceremony, Secretary Li Shigui and President Zhang Guangjun jointly inaugurated the School of Cyber Science and Engineering. Vice President Wu Gang issued letters of appointment for directors of research centers from various Schools cooperating with the University. Vice President Jin Baosheng issued the letters of appointment for representatives of external graduate tutors.
Mr. Li Shigui, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Nanjing Municipal Committee and Secretary of Jiangning District, congratulated on the establishment of the School and expressed his gratitude to Southeast University for its long-term support and help to the economic and social development in Jiangning District. He said that as a pretigious institution in China, Southeast University enjoys leading advantages in discipline construction, talent cultivation and scientific and technological innovation. Since Nanjing has been striving to increase its international innovation influence, he hoped that both sides could deepen the cooperation in the field of network security, enhance the transformation, application and industrialization of more and more technological achievements in Jiangning District through common platforms, collaborative innovation, joint efforts of universities and enterprises, etc. and thus turn network industry into a future landmark in Jiangning District. He also hoped that teachers and students at SEU could join in the innovation and entrepreneurship and contribute to the future development of Jiangning District. He also said that Jiangning District would fully support the development of Southeast University and honor his commitments with actions.
Bao Feng, Deputy Director of the Office of Cyberspace Affairs Commission of Jiangsu Provincial Committee, said that the inauguration of the School of Cyber Science and Engineering, SEU marked the official establishment of the School, and also symbolized that the development of cyberspace security in Jiangsu Province had entered a new stage. He believed that Southeast University would take this opportunity to continuously paly the leading role in the field of science and technology, make breakthroughs in cutting-edge basic theories and core technologies, and thus to make innovative achievements in cyber security. He said the Office of Cyberspace Affairs Commission of Jiangsu Provincial Committee would fully support the construction of the School of Cyber Science and Engineering and promote the high-quality development of the School.
President Zhang Guangjun, on behalf of SEU, expressed his welcome and gratitude to the leaders and guests present. He briefly reviewed the previous construction work of the School of Cyber Science and Engineering and the development orientation of the School. He put forward three requirements for the future construction and development of the School. Firstly, we should broaden the horizon and serve the national strategy. He stressed that in the new era, we should be aware that it was political responsibility and a mission for SEU to ensure successful management of the School of Cyber Science and Engineering and build the “Demonstration Project in the Construction of First-class Cyber Security Institute”. It is success and excellence that we are striving for. Southeast University should take concrete actions to meet the requirements of national security strategy, aiming to build a world-class School with Chinese characteristics. Secondly, we should set up goals and pursue excellence. He pointed out that we should earnestly implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speeches and requirements of national first-class cybersecurity institute construction. We should actively explore new pattern and mechanism featuring “high level, specialization, internationalization, and actualization”. We should strive to build a first-class teaching team, cultivate first-class talents, and make fundamental, original, and remarkable achievements in science and technology. Thirdly, we should open up, and guide the development. He stressed that we should form a good ecology containing network talents, technology innovation, industrial development, and resource sharing. A transformation and industrialization base of first-class cybersecurity achievements with radiating and leading functions should also be established. At the same time, we should lead and stimulate the construction and development of the national cybersecurity discipline, and thus promote and organize the relevant university union, industryalliance and international alliance in cyber security. President Zhang also expressed his gratitude for the strong support of the committee and government of Jiangning District. He demanded that the school should seize the opportunity of the core circle construction of knowledge innovation at Southeast University in Jiangning District and substantially promote the implementation of the contracted project of the School of Cyber Science and Engineering construction. In the end, President Zhang hoped to work with Jiangsu Province, Nanjing City and Jiangning District to jointly undertake the national mission of building a “first-class institute of cyber security”, and jointly contribute to the national cyber development strategy, as well as make a leading and exemplary historical contribution to the construction of an innovative province – Jiangsu and a famous innovative city – Nanjing.
Cheng Guang, Executive Vice Dean of the School of Cyber Science and Engineering expressed that under the guidance of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s thought of Socialism with Chinese characteristics, the School would take moraleducationand student cultivation as the fundamental task with the goal of fostering talents. We would also see it as our task to support national cyber development strategy. In order to accelerate the construction in talent training, scientific research, social service, and international cooperation, the School of Cyber Science and Engineering would try to become a well-recognized and influential college at home and abroad with excellent performance.
In addition, the school has also signed cooperation agreements with two enterprises, namely Integrity Tech and Hillstone Networks. On behalf of the Education Foundation, Shi Chang, Secretary of the Party Committee, accepted scholarships for students and grants for staff from the two enterprises.
After the ceremony, Academician Yu Quan, Dean of the School, gave an academic report entitled “Some Thoughts on the Future Network Architecture”. Cai Jingjing, Dean of Chunqiu College from Integrity Tech, also made a report on “Industry-university Collaboration Promotes Talent Training”. The experts of brother colleges and universities also carried out discussions on the discipline construction and development of cybersecurity.
It is reported that since Southeast University was authorized as one of the first institutions to set the first-level subject of Cybersecurity in 2016, it has integrated resources, seized opportunities, and taken abroadandlong-termview. The School of Cyber Science and Engineering was established at the end of 2016 and Yu Quan from the Chinese Academy of Engineering was invited to be the Dean. In September 2017, the university became one of the first seven universities of “Demonstration Project in the Construction of First-class Cyber Security Institute”, and at the same time in “Double Tops” construction, Cybersecurity was selected as one of the pioneering, emerging and interdisciplinary disciplines. In March 2018, SEU became the first university in Jiangsu Province to be granted the undergraduate program of Cybersecurity by the Ministry of Education. (Chen Zihan)
