On September 27, Prof. Tao Jun of the School of Cyber Science and Engineering gave a special lecture on the theme “Looking at Yourself from Another Perspective” for the 2018 freshmen. As an alumnus of SEU, Prof. Tao shared with us his own experience and gave an impressive enrollment education lecture to the 2018 undergraduates of the School of Cyber Science and Engineering.

The lecture consisted of three parts. Prof. Tao first talked about his life after the College Entrance Examination, thus triggering the students’ reflection on the changes in their life after the examination. His active interaction with the students aroused a heated discussion on how to maintain a good lifestyle, improve thinking ability, and develop hobbies and strengths. Taking his own experience as an example, Prof. Tao, shared his changes after the examination, and expressed his earnest expectations for the freshmen with kind and humorous words.

The lecture focused on the daily life and studies at campus. Prof. Tao gave suggestions and shared his experience in such aspects as the balance between student activities and academic studies, and the timing to start a part-time job or business. In this way, he responded to the students’ doubts. Prof. Tao highlighted that the students should observe the regulations of higher education, and he referred to a cheating case of a student. He also introduced the reward mechanism and graduate recommendation mechanism of SEU, and gave some suggestions on students’ future development, either in further study or employment.

In the end, Prof. Tao illustrated the significance of higher education. The freshmen thus got to understand that the university is an ivory tower for them to develop their personality and character, determine their life plans so as to fulfill their values. Prof. Tao pointed out that excellent academic achievement was not the ultimate goal of higher education. The underlying purpose was to develop students into individuals with a sense of responsibility, a sound personality, a clear goal, abundant knowledge and proper practice, thus to realize various values for themselves, for the society and for our country. He encouraged everyone to pursue their dreams and cherish their academic career. Faced with the severe international situation in cybersecurity and strong national demands, it is important to promote cybersecurity education. He hoped that students would shoulder their responsibilities, keep patriotic and seize the time.

During this lecture, Prof. Tao Jun not only gave advice and guidance on students’ life and study, but also answered the questions of students who were at a turning point of life. The freshmen learnt a lot from his warm but profound talks.
